A true story of betrayal, elder abuse and a daughter’s fight for justice.
We trusted him. We welcomed him into our family. What we didn’t know was that he was stealing from my mother.
David White Cares tells the story of that betrayal and the years-long battle for justice that ended in a four-year prison sentence.
It’s also a story about my mother, the importance of trust, and what can happen when that trust is exploited.
The Story Behind the Book
My mother had always been fiercely independent. Then corticobasal degeneration took away her movement, her speech and almost every means she had of protecting herself.
Living ten thousand miles away in Australia, I relied on a live-in carer who seemed to give Mum back some of the life her illness had stolen. He made her laugh, took her on adventures and became part of our family.
Then money began disappearing. Jewellery vanished. The man we trusted with Mum’s safety became the reason she no longer felt safe.
What followed was a determined, sometimes chaotic fight through care agencies, police, prosecutors and courtrooms.
But this isn’t just a story about betrayal. It’s about mothers and daughters, friendship, guilt and what it means to become someone’s voice when they’ve lost their own.
